Choosing a cellular network for your workforce’s mobile devices required, until recently, making serious commitments. From among the big cell phone companies, you selected a network with the coverage and speeds that hopefully met your needs. You signed up each device on a two-year contract, and the cell phone company delivered your iPads, mobileenabled laptops, or mobile hotspots. Maybe these mobile data devices had a small subsidy from the carrier — lowering your purchase price — but it was tiny compared to the huge subsidies offered on smartphones.
Once these commitments were made, you had little flexibility if your workforce’s size, location, or needs changed. You’d be charged $30 to $50 for each device each month, even if you had thousands of devices deployed, until the service contract was over. Fortunately, this approach, which greatly benefitted the cell phone companies, is ending.
